The blues, the greys, the blacks ...

Forgive me if I confess that the title of my post kind of describes how I feel. Having the blues. Feeling grey. In a black hole. Under the weather. Snowed under. Not real snow, which I would love to see one day, as most of you know, but the kind of snow that consists of hundreds and hundreds of white pages. Filled with words, obviously. Which means they are not really white. But I digress.

Half of the second of the two books I am editing  is being rewritten by the author after the Department of Education changed the curriculum at the last minute. It means that I edited half a book for nothing. The deadline remains the same. The payment remains the same. Such is life.

In addition I have taken on another project - content development for a CBT (Computer Based Training) mathematics course. The deadline is in two months. (I am thinking of changing the previous paragraph into a word sum for this course. One has to have one's fun.)

The next few months up to May will be hectic, if not worse. I was sitting this morning wondering to myself (and to Snous, who is the only one who will listen to me): "Why, oh, why do I do this to myself?"  But then the dentist's bill arrived in the post and I remembered why.

Anyway, to get to the point, the picture is of a "lap" (Afrikaans for fabric or cloth) I am busy working on. I just happened to have the different bits of fabric from different car boot sales and junk shop finds. They are actually all quite ugly, but together they make quite a statement, I think ...

Love the stitching - the "lap"- The patterns and colours are really charming even though you have deemed them ugly...just goes to show that ugly placed nicely and stitched creatively can be beautiful- I should try that with my face...sorry you said "yes" again to a tough job. I shake my fist at the sky and yell "GIVE THAT WOMAN A BREAK! DAMN YOU!"
wish I could help you out...did the post arrive yet- the post that I sent about forty years ago...

Your fabrics work very well together, and your stitching enhances the patterns! Sorry you are under pressure with your work. If only I could have parcelled up some of our snow and sent it to you!

I love the way the fabrics go together in a charcoaly kind of palette. They look good. I hope your editing goes well. It is so hard to be at the start of a mammoth and seemingly thankless task, especially when you think you have done some and then the goalposts move. I think all jobs have this theme appearing in them somewhere. If only life could be more about creating, enjoying and relaxing!

I'm guessing most of the text in your pages is dry and boring. Too bad you can't at least edit some juicy novels or some exotic travel books.

I'm glad you're taking some time for yourself to enjoy a little fun with fabric. The colors are nice and soft.

Oh dear, I hate when clients change their opinion in the midst of a project. Your lap reminds me of a European landscape or how I imagine Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" would be in late fall. Poetic and beautiful.

This sounds so familiar! Work is too often frustrating. I don't mind when it's tough, hard, boring but I can barely handle frustrating. I can't believe they won't pay for the work already done!
On another note, I love your patchwork!

if these fabrics are redeemed through your project (and it is apparent that they are), it is your eye and hand that deserve credit.
