New Acquisitions #9

Found at the car boot sale two weeks ago ...

I now have four old scales - two from Germany, one from Australia, and my most recent one, which looks Scandinavian, I think.

You may wonder why I post this litany of acquisitions. I have decided to keep a catalogue of what I buy (apart from necessities and groceries) in an effort to understand why I buy stuff. I like each of my posted nine acquisitions - not exactly love, but like. I don't need any of them. I did not go searching for any of them. Yet each one caught my eye and has found a space in my life and a use - even if only as decoration (2, 3, 5). Some have turned out to be quite functional, although I did not initially buy them for a reason (1 is used for meditation, 6 to warm my neck on chilly mornings, and I use number 4 on occasion to play one of those memory games as a bit of brain exercise - have to keep the Big A at bay, you know). One was specifically purchased for its entertainment value (8), another for its creative potential (7) and the last one (9) I'm afraid was purely to extend a collection.

The rule of 'one thing in, one thing out', does not really work for me. I really like the things I buy, so I do not necessarily want to get rid of something just because I've bought something new. Do you acquire stuff that you don't need? And why?

I love your catalogue philosophy.
I love your scale collection too. I recently bought an old scale. Then my mom has offered me hers. So I was just thinking yesterday - I can't have only 2 - I need a group of them, so I will be on the lookout for more! The one I have now is a Krupps from Germany.

What a cool scale! You must be very tiny indeed- I can picture you climbing up on it and sitting crooked to see how many ounces you weigh. I hope that you visit with K went well. I hope that you carried me along in spirit - well wishes!

Lovely scale. I have the same impulse as you to collect stuff I am drawn to. I worry a bit as to the origins of my addiction but not too much!

"need" is an interesting word.
the thing i buy most often is clothing. i need to wear clothes but i do not need to own all the clothes that i own.

also, "creative potential" is one that gets me in a bit of trouble sometimes...
