I was reminded by a post of editor of my love of Hitchcock films. I have seen most of them - many times. My favourite is Rear Window. Just love it. I could never quite get into The Birds though. I read Daphne du Maurier's original story - bleak and nightmarish. And I am pretty sure it, and Hitchcock's film version, are partly responsible for my aversion to birds. They scare me, especially crows and city pigeons and starlings. And I have to add that Snous and I were attacked (!) by two mean-looking seagulls a few weeks ago ...

At certain times of the year, we get great clouds of crows flying over the house and landing in the field across the road from us - having seen The Birds several times ....well I wouldn't go outside while they are there!! Another super journal page - but just wait till you see my wonderful drawing!!
Bird phobias seem to be pretty common. You and Snous are in good company. DH has a real problem with flapping wings. A woodpecker fell down the chimney of our wood stove and came screaming out when DH opened the door to start a fire. DH nearly passed out. I caught it in mid air and asked him to take a photo of it. The picture was pretty blurry. Yes, and seagulls are really mean scavengers.
Daphne's story was creeepier than the film- I thought the film was hilarious, so silly.. I grew up with birds in the house- Have nearly always had one. The flapping and seemingly irratic behaviour is familiar, not scary. I also like snakes , rodents and spiders and all of those things that usually throw people into temporary terror. I love them all.
Your illustration is really sweet, not at all scary...Birds are cool. So are YOU!xxxooo
oh no, how terrible i love birds, but then i never really watched or read birds or was ever attaked by them... sigh
i love your illustrations too :)
ps how nice is the weather?! and we really should do a cup of coffee somethime ;)
my mother's mailman used to get repeatedly attacked by birds whenever he came near her house, to the point where he would hand her the mail for the rest of the street and scurry away, leaving her to complete his duty for him. finally she suggested that all his shiny gold jewelry may have been attracting or agitating the bird. he came sans accessories though i am sorry to say i cannot recall if this solved the problem. she's on to another delivery person now (i think there have been quite a few since michael - i assume it's safe to use his first name).
i don't care much for birds, i must admit.
Shame dear sista! I'm sure they feel your animosity! I love watching them in the morning after putting out some fruit and seeds: pigeons, sparrows, grey louries, weavers, thrushes not to mention the beautiful crested barbets. What a pleasure to listen to their little chirpy sounds and calling their mates!
my best friend has bird phobia. i never took it very seriously until one day, in thailand we pass this giant square full of doves. a little boy runs through the bird flock on the ground, making them all take off and bask around in the air. my friend had a complete break down, standing there in the middle of all these birds and basking wings. it was awful. i had to grab her, hold her tight and walk her to the side.
and the bird movie is creepy. never read the book.
That journal page is amazing!
Very unique and creative!

Hmmmmmmmmm, one of my best friends as a child was a crow. They are capable of incredible gentleness ...and naughtiness. Sometimes the crow would land on the donkey's back (we lived on a farm) and peck it very hard. How strange! It even attacked visitors sometimes but with me it was ever gentle. Thank you for this post, it's sparked some magical memories. And A/M, your illustrations are FABULULOUS! x L
