I read Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters a while ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not being able to find anything else by her in bookshops or our local library, I resorted to Project Gutenberg, and downloaded My Lady Ludlow. Where I read this ..." ... but letters were letters then; and we made great prizes of them, and read them and studied them like books. Now the post comes rattling in twice a day, bringing short jerky notes, some without beginning or end, but just a little sharp sentence, which well-bred folks would think too abrupt to be spoken. "
... and chuckled. Not so much has changed then since 1859.

Have you seen the three excellent BBC adaptations of Gaskill's novels? North & South, Wives & Daughters and Cranford. Romantic, hilarious and heart-rending. Complete TV magic and the first is probably the best costume drama the BBC have ever done. Great watching over the holiday season.

emails & ecards...the romance has flown out the windows...received 'junk'mails ads in the mailbox now... ha!
Until recently i still wrote letters- works of art, they were- composed and illustrated! Blogworld sort of fills that gap but there is something more special about recieving paper in the mail! I miss getting real letters - penmanship, scribbles and stamps. By the way, i sent some bits to play with last week. Maybe it will arrive....
u.a.d.t. - I know. Sadly I've fallen into the trap of writing emails only. But I do love writing paper! I even make little cards and envelopes from recycled magazine paper (which lie abandoned in my drawer). Maybe I should send some as xmas cards this year ...

laura - thanks for visiting! No, I have not seen any of those! But I've heard of Cranford & hope to see it at some stage! We do not have good TV here (we also do not have DsTV)and very few DVD shops get the 'good stuff'. But I did buy the Pride and Prejudice BBC TV series which I am thoroughly enjoying!

linda sue - Your letters sound fantastic - the stuff that the (lucky) recipient keeps for ever and ever! Oh, Oh!! Bits to play with! That is so sweet!! I'll let you know when it arrives. After the safe arrival of Three Little Birds I have a little more faith in our postal system, so will keep my fingers crossed!
I also miss snail mail but depend heavily on SMSes and email to keep in touch. Mrs Gaskell would be appalled!
