Deco-den

Stands for 'decorated denwa (telephone)' in Japan - a new trend that is seen especially in Tokyo. (See a feature on deco-den in pingmag.) I have a cellphone, but I'm not sure I want mine to look like this - I might get hungry and eat it in a moment of confusion ...
You can buy kits to do it yourself ...

or take it in for customisation ...
Either way, I think I will stick with kimonos.

I can just see these in an exhibit of vernacular art of the turn of the century, curated by some gallery in 2100 ...

So fun.

stephanie - That would be so funny - but yes, the cell phone as art - very possible! See http://www.we-make-money-not-art.com/archives/2006/02/-emerging-japan.php and http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/01/AR2007020100720.html amongst others!

I think it's incredible how some people have an need to embellish EVERYTHING - always wanting to turn the functional into something more decorative/decorated. I don't want my cellphone to look like this either but I quite like the creative urge that's taken it here...

reminds me of the intensely decorated fake nails popular too.
been spending time admiring the japanese line mina perhonen, and the result is that i'm having a burst of crafty-ness. made an impromptu necklace and now i'm working on ... making some sleeves - if they work out okay, i'll post about them eventually.
but no matter how much time i find on my hands, i will not do this to my cell phone.

kendalee - Maybe that is one thing that distinguishes us as human? The need to decorate?
freshly found - Oh my goodness, I am SO CHUFFED! Mega- and giga-chuffed! Thank you VERY much - I've been admiring your cushion covers for a long time!
editor - Oh, I love those bursts of crafty-ness! Mine rarely result in a usable/good-looking object, but it is just the FUN I get in making/creating that makes it worthwhile. I cannot wait to see your necklace & sleeves!

i have seen the evidence of your crafty-ness. you're down right productive! me on the other hand, it's just like you said, the pleasure is really in the process. and it feels so nice to be stimulated/motivated to create.
the necklace (very very very VERY simple) will be posted tomorrow.

editor - Oh, I loved your necklace! I'm going to play with the idea this weekend. Summer is coming so I can think about accessories like necklaces again. (In winter it gets covered up by jerseys and coats and shawls and stuff - hardly worth the effort!)
