A Bit of Sparkle

I've always loved chandeliers. So I made my own one. It doesn't look like this ...
By Massucco Warner Miller (found via {this is glamorous})

or this ...

by Michael McHale (found via {this is glamorous})

Our space is quite small, so I only wanted a very small chandelier above our table (which is a 100-year old door, balanced on two trestles). I used a 1950's lampshade frame from the carboot sale, and hung an assortment of crystals and beads from it.

(seen at night in front of window with full moon shining...)

I now want to make another one, with the help of one of the wonderful wire artists in Cape Town - something like this perhaps!
Wire chandelier by Marie Cristophe - available here.

lady smaggle - The very good thing about a chandelier is that when you have a party you can swing from it...

karina - Well, the one I made was really simple, there is nothing to teach! I took an old lampshade frame, turned it upside down, screwed two hooks into the ceiling board, hung the frame onto the two hooks, and then proceeded to tie fishingline of different lengths to it, with crystal drops at the ends. I also threaded beads on some of the lines. Easy peasy! But the wire one (the Marie Cristophe one) I will not be able to make myself - I will have to get somebody who can work with wire to do the frame for me, so that I can just hang the beads and crystals.
stephanie - Let me know what you do with them! Aren't crystals just so glamorous? I love them!
kendalee - I saw a wire artist working on the pavement near our house when I went for a walk yesterday, maybe (if he is still there) I can commission him to do the frame for me. I am getting quite excited already!

karina - Do you live in Buenos Aires? Oh, it has the most divine fleamarkets! I bought some really nice pieces there when I visited in 2005! Good luck - I hope you find just the thing you need for your chandelier!

That's beautiful! I love how it's kind of asymmetrical, and the twirly hooks are great. Ingenious!
